After several years of hauling shingles and construction waste into local landfills and other disposal facilities Mike Griffin, manager of Griffin Waste Services, LLC knew there had to be a better way. In July of 2009 Mike started the process of developing a better plan using sister company Handle Safe Systems, LLC as the recycling operation. Over the last 2 years there have been several hurdles to overcome to implement a meaningful recycling plan. The 1st hurdle has been the economic slowdown which made obtaining capital for a start-up project difficult. Handle Safe Systems, LLC leased a 5000 sq. ft facility located @ 402 Old Leicester Hwy, Asheville NC and has been able to gradually up fit this facility as funds became available.
This facility is now permitted by the State as a solid waste transfer facility and truck scales are installed and certified. We are able to test and certify if asbestos is present and we have up fit our horizontal grinder to handle shingles. We have signed an agreement with APAC- Atlantic Division for the purchase of our 1st 4 million pounds of ground asphalt shingles. This product will be incorporated into hot mix asphalt (HMA) and used for the construction of roadway, drive way and parking surfaces.
Now, after 2 years and an investment of over $600,000.00 we are ready to promote the recycling of asphalt shingles. The start-up of this program for spring of 2011 has been expedited by the commitment of APAC in their purchase of our product. We are also pleased that we have been awarded a Recycling Business Development Grant in the amount of $15,000.00 from the NC Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources.
Recycling shingles into hot mix asphalt not only saves landfill space but it improves the asphalt and creates jobs. It just makes sense.
